Description
Nature’s Truth is one of the leading premium quality vitamin and dietary supplement brands in the United States. Some of its products are already available in pharmacies in Hungary through A-Lab Pharma, which also operates the Rapid TestLab. Selenium is a so-called trace mineral, so we need very small amounts to keep our bodies functioning properly. But its absence can cause a number of problems. Selenium also plays an important role in thyroid function, hair and nail health, oxidative health of cells and maintenance of a proper immune system. It also plays a role in the normal formation of sperm, so it can be important in preparing for the birth of a baby. However, the soils of Europe, including our own, are deficient in selenium, so it is very difficult to get the daily requirement from a normal diet and it is worth taking a selenium supplement.
Selenium the versatile trace element
Selenium, although only a minimal amount is needed daily for our bodies to function optimally, is involved in many processes and its deficiency causes many visible and noticeable symptoms.
What are the main effects of selenium?
Hair, skin and nail health
Selenium acts as an antioxidant, neutralising free radicals that age the skin and nails and hair, helping to prevent brittle nails, skin wrinkling, sagging and thinning hair.
Immune system function and tumour prevention
One of selenium’s most important functions is to modulate the immune system, which means it helps to maintain optimal function in both under- and overactive conditions. It is also essential for autoimmune diseases. Without enough selenium, the immune system is weakened and recent research suggests that our body is less able to defend itself against tumours.
Thyroid gland function
Did you know that the thyroid is the selenium centre of our body? The thyroid gland has more selenium than any other organ. Selenium actively helps to regulate thyroid function and the production of thyroid hormones in the body. In deficiency, the production of the hormone T3 is also reduced, and in severe cases of selenium deficiency, the supply of selenium is concentrated in the thyroid gland, diverting it away from other organs that need selenium for optimal function.
How the immune system works
A selenium deficiency can leave the body vulnerable to disease and increase recovery times. Because selenium contributes to the optimal functioning of the immune system, in its absence viruses and bacteria can multiply more easily and quickly. Adequate levels of selenium help the formation of white blood cells, which in turn helps to kill viruses.
Oxidative stress
Selenium reduces oxidative stress, and its deficiency often causes rheumatic and gouty inflammation and eczema and psoriasis. Selenium plays a role in the production of prostaglandins, reducing inflammation and relieving rheumatoid arthritis.
Productivity
In men, selenium is involved in the formation of sperm, which may increase fertility. However, it also plays an important role in women’s organisation: women with selenium deficiency have a higher miscarriage rate.
Liver diseases
Studies show that people with liver disease have low levels of selenium. It is therefore important for people with chronic liver disease to increase their selenium intake, as selenium reduces the risk of liver cancer.
Selenium levels and nutrition
Selenium is normally ingested through food. The amount of selenium inputs depends on the selenium content of the soil. As soil selenium levels are low in Europe, including Hungary, it is impossible to get enough of it in the body through diet alone. This problem is exacerbated by the large amounts of processed foods, which reduce the amount of selenium in them. An unhealthy lifestyle (smoking and alcohol) also further reduces selenium utilisation.
This is why it is important to add selenium regularly to the diet through supplements. In terms of utilisation, organic selenium is the most efficient source of selenium, as the body can absorb it much more easily and in a higher percentage than artificial selenium.
Important: Nature’s Truth products and Nature’s Truth Selenium are typically based on natural ingredients and the most beneficial ingredients. Whenever technically feasible, our products do NOT contain gluten, wheat, yeast, milk, lactose, soy, artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and are GMO free. This means that they are as free as possible from harmful ingredients and provide safe support for known or latent sensitivities, while having an optimised composition rich in bioactive ingredients, and therefore they represent very good value for money. Yeast selenium is an organic trace element with a utilisation rate of almost 90%, with a more efficient utilisation rate than artificially produced selenium.
Selenium contributes:
