BACKGROUND: Adenovirus infections most commonly cause respiratory illness, but depending on the serotype of the infectious agent, they can also cause a variety of other diseases and presentations. They can cause conjuctivitis, colds, pneumonia, upper respiratory illness, diarrhoea and many other symptoms. This group also includes the influenza A and B viruses and the RSV virus. The test detects the following serotypes: 1-8, 11, 14, 16, 17, 19, 37.Influenza is an acute viral infection that attacks the respiratory tract. An infectious disease that is easily spread by coughing and sneezing aerosol droplets containing live virus. Every year, flu epidemics break out in the autumn and winter months. A-type viruses are typically more common than B-type viruses and are associated with most severe influenza outbreaks, while B-type infections are generally milder. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a virus that causes infection of the lungs and airways and is a major cause of respiratory illness in young children. Adults may only have symptoms of the common cold, such as nasal congestion or runny nose, sore throat, mild headache, cough, fever and general malaise. However, in premature babies or children with lung, heart or immune system diseases, RSV infection can lead to other, more serious, complications.
