The aim of the test is to detect the 4 pathogens mentioned above, in case of gastrointestinal symptoms, to aid diagnosis.
Background: All four viruses typically attack the gastrointestinal tract. Rotavirus has a genetic material consisting of 11 double-stranded DNA segments and attacks enterocytes in the small intestine, shedding viruses from damaged cells into the intestinal lumen. It most commonly affects children between six months and two years of age, and is most common in developing countries, with diarrhoea being the main symptom. Norovirus spreads mainly in closed communities, for example in hospitals, causing nosocomial infection. Symptoms appear after a day or two of incubation, also associated with diarrhoea. Astrovirus is a small, round virus that replicates in the cells of the mucous membranes and epithelial cells of the small intestine, also causing diarrhoea. It is spread through infected faeces and by mouth. The family of adenoviruses is a large family with many serotypes identified. Each member contains double-stranded DNA. These infections can target many different organs or organ systems, with serotypes 40 and 41 infecting the intestinal tract.
