BACKGROUND: The persistent presence of small amounts of albumin in the urine (microalbuminuria) may be the first sign of impaired kidney function. In diabetics, positive results may be the first symptom of diabetic nephropathy. Without therapy, the amount of albumin released increases (macroalbuminuria) and kidney failure may develop.
