The aim of the test is to detect the anti-Müllerian hormone and to test ovarian function.
BACKGROUND: In the developing embryo, both non-urogenital organ systems develop by further differentiation of the same organ valves. If male-specific testosterone and dihydrotestosterone are present during fetal development, male reproductive organs develop, and if they are absent, female reproductive organs develop. This process involves a peptide hormone called anti-Müllerian hormone, which is produced by the embryonic testis. This causes the Müllerian tube in the foetus to atrophy, which would develop into the structures that characterise the female phenotype (the uterine horn and uterus). At the same time, AMH production also occurs in the ovaries around childbirth. Its role is multifaceted, firstly, during early follicle maturation, AMH inhibits the primordial follicles from reaching maturity. On the other hand, during the maturation of the antral follicles, which are the dominant follicle that will make it through maturation, AMH inhibits the follicles’ response to FSH, thereby regulating the secretion of the dominant follicle. Its level decreases with age and its amount can be used to infer fertility and the number of follicles present, as the number of follicles is proportional to the level of AMH. You can also estimate the time until menopause.
