The aim of the test is to detect the presence of blood (haemoglobin) or calprotectin in the faeces. Screening for suspected colorectal tumours or other diseases with inflammation or bleeding.

Background: Fecal Occult Blood (FOB), which is present in many gastrointestinal diseases. Colon cancer typically starts slowly with a benign and asymptomatic lesion (called a colonic polyp), which later develops into a malignant tumour. Blood in the stool that is invisible to the naked eye (called occult blood) may be a symptom of a cancerous lesion in the bowel. Faecal blood is not necessarily a feature of colon cancer, but it is a common symptom. In addition, blood in the stool may be a symptom of other diseases such as haemorrhoids, bleeding stomach ulcers, inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g. autoimmune bowel diseases). In the early stages, these gastrointestinal problems may not necessarily show visible symptoms, just an unseen (occult) amount of blood. Calprotectin is a calcium-binding protein present in the cytoplasm of neutrophil granulocytes. Its presence in the faeces indicates inflammatory processes. It is used in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Sample: stool

Method: immunochromatography (detection of haemoglobin and calprotectin)
