The purpose of the test is to detect elevated FSH levels and predict the onset of menopause.

Background: During normal ovulation, around the third day before the onset of menstruation, progesterone and oestrogen levels start to fall due to the regression of the corpus luteum. This eliminates the negative feedback and increases the production of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) in adenohypophysis. It recruits a group of immature follicles and helps the dominant follicle to develop.

During menopause, ovarian production of oestrogen and progesterone decreases. As a consequence, negative feedback on the gonadotroph cells of the adenohypophysis is reduced, leading to increased FSH production. This may indicate the onset of menopause. Reduced oestrogen levels almost always lead to a reduction in bone tissue. The hormone is excreted in the urine.
