Description

The presence of the H. pylori pathogen can cause inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestine, which can later lead to ulceration and/or cancer. Helicobacter pylori is found in the vast majority (90-95%) of duodenal ulcers and in more than 2/3 of gastric ulcers. Specific treatment against H. pylori can reduce ulcer recurrence by a fraction. An unrecognised H. pylori bacterial infection can increase the risk of stomach cancer by 3-5 times, so it is recommended as a preventive, regular screening in case of complaints or as a preventive measure.

H. pylori (HP) is a common type of bacteria that multiplies in the digestive tract and tends to attack the lining of the stomach. Around 60 percent of the world’s adult population is infected. H. pylori infections are usually harmless, but it is responsible for the majority of stomach and small intestine ulcers H. pylori often infects the stomach in childhood. Although infection with this strain of bacteria usually causes no symptoms, it can lead to illness in some people, including stomach ulcers and an inflammatory condition in the stomach called gastritis. H. pylori has adapted to the harsh, acidic environment of the stomach. These bacteria are able to change the environment around them and reduce its acidity so that they can survive. The spiral shape of H. pylori allows them to penetrate the stomach lining, where they are protected by mucus and cannot be reached by the body’s immune cells. Bacteria can interfere with the immune response and make sure that they are not destroyed. This can lead to stomach problems. Bacteria have lived with humans for thousands of years. Infections are thought to be spread orally. This can happen if someone does not wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet. H. pylori can also spread through contact with contaminated water or food. Bacteria are thought to cause stomach problems when they invade the lining of the stomach and produce substances that neutralise stomach acids. This makes the cells of the stomach more vulnerable to harsh acids. Stomach acid and H. pylori together irritate the stomach lining and can cause ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.

How does the Helicobacter Pylori test work?

This test is used to qualitatively detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori antigen in a stool sample. If the person has H. pylori infection, antigens of the bacterium will also appear in the stool, and the test will detect them. The test can be used in the comfort and discretion of your home or similar home environment to check for infection in a painless and discreet way.

For whom is testing recommended?

The following symptoms may also be caused by H. pylori infection, so testing is recommended if they occur (especially if several symptoms occur at the same time):

  • active stomach or duodenal ulcers
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach and intestinal pain
  • dyspepsia (heartburn, bloating, nausea)
  • gastritis (gastritis of the stomach)
  • peptic ulcer
  • duodenal ulcer
  • frequent nausea
  • acid reflux
  • atrophic gastritis
  • gastrointestinal lymphoma
  • loss of appetite, change in eating habits
  • appearance of blood in the stool

In addition, we recommend that you take the test in the following cases:

  • if a close relative has had stomach cancer
  • before starting long-term anti-inflammatory therapy
  • functional upper abdominal pathologies
